DANIA BEACH, Fla. — Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies have identified the 40-year-old suspect who died following a shooting Saturday in Dania Beach as Melvin Presley, a convict.
The Florida Department of Corrections released Presley from prison on November 7. He had been in and out of prison after 13 convictions in Collier County.
Officers also identified a 19-year-old man who was injured Saturday night outside a 7-Eleven in the 800 block of Stirling Road as Justin Kessel.
“The shooting followed separate armed robberies,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Gerdy St. Louis wrote in a statement released Monday.
The agency identified the victims as a man and a store employee. Kessel robbed the man at gunpoint in the parking lot and the employee inside the store, according to the St. Louis statement.
“Witnesses say Kessel ran back toward the male robbery victim, who had removed a firearm from his vehicle,” St. Louis wrote. “Detectives said the victim fired several shots, striking Kessel.”
Presley, who was riding in a gray 2025 Honda CR-V, attempted to run over the robbery victim, who then shot him, according to deputies. Presley drove away, and detectives found him wounded inside the Honda along Phippen Waiters Road, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“Presley suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported by paramedics to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment. He was later pronounced dead,” St. Louis wrote. “The investigation into the circumstances of the robbery that led to the shooting remains active and ongoing.”
